Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Let's go have juice with a goose and a moose.

I LOVE Dr. Seuss so much! He was my very favorite author as a child. I would sit and look at his books over and over again. The drawings were whimsical, the writing was unique, and he had the most creative characters in his books.

I will still pull out One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and get lost in it's humor and wit. It's my favorite Seussian work. The Clark they found in the dark park illustration makes me laugh out loud EVERY time I see it. The little guy in the front of the book is something I've wanted to paint on a nursery or playroom wall. I've put him at the bottom of the post.

I remember reading those books repeatedly to my little brother and sister. Shawn loved Horten Hears a Who, but his very favorite was Horten Hatches an Egg. {Oh that naughty Mazy bird!}

Christmas is not the same if I don't get to see and read, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. It has such a beautiful message in it. {Can't stand the live action one}

In 8th grade english, a class Jeff and I had together, we had to memorise and recite a poem from memory. I chose the ABC book. I made it all the way to Z. Miss. Money was quite impressed. I think my "peom" was the only the second hardest though. Brent Gessel did The Legend of Sam McGee, that one was impressive.

I have a Dr. Seuss quote hanging on my dinning room wall too. "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened!" I love that. So much of what he says has such an understated wisdom to it. I also love "A persons a person, no matter how small." In fact, I think I will just put a few more quotes down for you. They are all gems and you can find more if you google them.

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

“You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.”

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life's realities.”

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own.
And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go.”

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

I'm not quite sure what I am going to do to celebrate this wonderful whimsical man's birthday today. Heaven knows there are tons of ideas online. We will most likely have some pizza, read some of his books, and watch the Grinch or Horton....

From there to here,
from here to there,
funny things
are everywhere.
{I miss you Dr. Seuss}

I love Dr. Seuss too. I wish I could have known him personally.

Our conversations would have been so much fun I think.

Oh man!! One Fish Two Fish is my favorite too!

And the other night, in a moment of pure randomness, I started reciting the ABC book to Andy - I got as far as L before drawing a blank. And since Tyler's 11, it's probably been a good 7 years since I read that book last!!

Can't wait to start it up again with Daneekins!!

heidi, katherine had memorized several of his books by the time she was 4... (which was good and bad;).
good in that she developed a love for his books, good that she had a healthy little sponge for a brain, good in that she stopped quoting the entire forrest gump movie, and good because suess' books were such a good source of positivity.
"bad???" you ask.
well, many of seuss' books ARE quite long; there was no more skipping pages in order to hurry through "green eggs and ham" for the 10,001st time. and, bad because she thought that she could trick me by telling me she could read (hence it was a bit of a fight to try to actually teach her, ha;).

"and will you succeed? yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed."
dr. seuss

and she FINALLY did!!!

love,
dani

My boys walked off down the street this morning for school, each with a tall Dr. Seuss hat on for the celebration at school. They met their walking buddy (jan's daughter) and all three of them were sporting their hats, quite a sight.
There's no doubt that Dr. Seuss made a huge impact on all of us. I'm excited to hear about the activities at school today, I'm glad they recognize it and make it special for the kids.

Dr Seuss books were the first books that ever interested me enough to want to read for pleasure. I'm pretty sure that one of the Horton books was the first book I read all by myself when I was in second grade. I was absolutely determined about two things when you and Donald were small. I wanted to make sure that you would know and love Dr Seuss for life and also have that much affection for Beverly Cleary. I remember Donald's third grade teacher telling him that he needed to find other authors to enjoy. I was not happy that she had the nerve to try to get him into that ever negative Judy Bloom. In her world siblings always hate each other, and children are hardly ever nice. Talk about a horrible substitute for Dr Seuss and Beverly Cleary.

I love how Kohl's will periodically have Seuss books for $5 and the money goes to benefit children. That's how I'm slowly building our collection.
